At approximately 4:27 p.m. on July 28, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 (preliminary) occurred with its epicenter in the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture; a maximum seismic intensity of 7 was recorded in Uki City and Hikawa Town.The Japan Meteorological Agency has named this earthquake the “Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake.” Damage to essential services—including collapsed or damaged homes, water outages, and power outages—has spread across a wide area, primarily in Kumamoto Prefecture. Assessing and documenting the damage to affected homes is essential for applying for disaster certificates, filing insurance claims, and planning restoration work.
