[Customer Case Study] Free Yourself from Rain, Wind, and Elevation Changes with Just One Smartphone! 3D Scanning for Site Surveys in Exterior Construction and Landscaping Cuts Time by 90%

▼Highlights of This Case Study

Challenges: It is difficult to survey complex shapes such as existing walls, rocks, and trees. Other challenges include the physical strain caused by weather conditions (extreme heat or cold, rain, and strong winds), errors in manual surveying, and the need for rework.
Implementation: We adopted Scanat based on a recommendation from a trusted source. The deciding factor was its exceptional ease of use, with intuitive controls that feel like watching a video.
Results: On-site surveying time has been drastically reduced to one-fifth to one-tenth of the previous time (as little as 10 minutes). Surveying errors and the need for return visits have been completely eliminated, and customer trust has improved thanks to proposals based on the latest technology.

◼︎ About Leboa Co., Ltd.

・Design and construction of exterior structures and landscaping, as well as drawing preparation services for industry professionals

Le Boeuf Co., Ltd. provides end-to-end services, from design to construction, for exterior and landscaping projects.

We have a well-established reputation for our proven technical expertise and highly creative design capabilities. In addition to handling our own construction projects, we also widely accept requests from other companies in the industry to provide design services on their behalf, creating drawings for them.

◼︎ Challenges Before Implementation

・The difficulty of surveying complex natural features and the heavy workload on-site, which is heavily influenced by weather conditions

At renovation and landscaping sites, there are numerous objects—such as existing walls, stones, and trees—with extremely complex and irregular shapes.

It was extremely difficult to accurately determine the position and shape of these objects using manual measurements with conventional tools such as calipers , and the process was very time-consuming.

Furthermore, the fact that we work outdoors—and are therefore directly affected by the weather—was a major obstacle.

Not only did we have to work in the sweltering heat of summer and the bitter cold of winter, but we also faced constant physical hardships: on rainy days, our paper blueprints and notebooks would get wet, making surveying difficult, and on windy days, our documents would get blown away.

◼︎ How We Discovered Scanat and Why We Chose It

・A stamp of approval from someone you trust, and overwhelming “ease of use”

My first encounter with Scanat when I was working on a project to digitally scan gardens. A highly knowledgeable and trustworthy colleague—who was part of the same team at the time—had compared various apps and Scanat, saying it was “the easiest to use.”

The deciding factors in our decision to adopt this product were not only the high praise from that trusted source but also the“overwhelming ease of use” and “affordable price range” we experienced when we actually tried it out.

I was immediately drawn to the fact that it requires absolutely no complicated operations or specialized knowledge—you simply trace the scene as if you were recording a video on a smartphone, and the advanced digital scan is completed—so I decided to adopt it on the spot.

◼︎ Use Cases

・Smooth data transfer from the field to CAD operators for drafting

In actual operations, sales representatives—or Mr. Ikeda, the company’s president, himself—first travel to the site and Scanat to perform a 3D scan of the location.

After that, the scanned data was shared with the CAD operator.

Scanat operator imports Scanat into CAD software and creates design drawings for exterior and landscaping projects while overlaying them on the actual on-site layers.

Since we can bring back a three-dimensional representation of the site exactly as it is, sharing the information with office-based operators is very smooth.

◼︎ Benefits of Implementation

・Survey time has been drastically reduced to one-fifth to one-tenth of what it used to be! The number of return visits due to errors has been completely eliminated.

Since its implementation, the speed and accuracy of on-site surveying and drafting have improved dramatically.

Before: Manual surveying. This process takes anywhere from one hour to half a day and is prone to measurement errors. If an error is discovered, there is also the risk of having to revisit the site at a later date.

After: Scanat. Surveys take only 10 to 15 minutes (reduced to as little as one-tenth of the previous time), and surveying errors are completely eliminated. The need for follow-up visits is eliminated.

Operational efficiency has improved thanks to a dramatic reduction in the time spent on-site.
Physical strain during inclement weather has also been minimized.

Furthermore, when we show clients the 3D model and explain, “This is how we surveyed the site,” they’re not only surprised by the new technology but also very pleased, exclaiming, “That’s amazing!”

Our professional approach—mastering the use of cutting-edge tools—has played a major role in earning a high level of confidence and trust from our clients.

・As an essential tool for business improvement, I would confidently recommend it to my peers in the industry.

Scanat is an app that has solved a problem we’ve been facing for many years. Once you try it, you’ll immediately realize just how outstanding and convenient it is. Not only does it reduce the workload on the front lines, but it also leads directly to tangible operational improvements and increased productivity, so I wholeheartedly and confidently recommend it to everyone.” (Yukihiro Ikeda, CEO)

In the exterior construction and landscaping market, where demand is expected to grow even further, Scanat, Ltd Scanat plans to utilize Scanat as a “powerful partner for operational improvement” to achieve further business expansion.
