While wooden headboards are common in Japan, fabric-upholstered headboards have long been popular in classic styles, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Machida’s vision for the headboard’s design is rooted in the idea that “simply by sleeping, you’ll quietly grow stronger tomorrow.” “Sleep” is a precious time that restores our senses and rejuvenates both body and mind. We’ve reimagined the bedroom—where we spend that time—as a “Studio of Tranquility,” a personal sanctuary for inner peace. We’ve redefined it not merely as a place for rest, but as a private space for quiet recovery. The name of this concept is “L’Atelier du Calme” (Studio of Tranquility).

This concept is underpinned by the perspective of neuroaesthetics. When we see something beautiful, our brains experience a sense of comfort and our emotions begin to unwind—we’ve embodied this connection in a fabric where colors blend as softly as in a watercolor painting, and in a flowing form inspired by the elegant shape of a crown.
This piece bridges “sensibility and science,” redefining the bedroom as a space for physical and mental recovery and the cultivation of sensibility. The soft, contourless layering of colors gently soothes the viewer’s heart. We have incorporated this beauty into the bedroom, where you spend your nights.
